That night I slept well. The case had yielded some satisfying glimmers of light. Then I’d met a nice girl, a strong bonus. I awoke the next morning ready to work. After a shower and shave, I called my answering service. Mitty had left the contact details for Billy House.

I wanted to get going, but I never start without a meal. Then I remembered a friend had suggested a place in Santa Monica that served memorable French toast. I had rescued my morning routine.

The phone number shared was to a marina office. I inquired about Billy House; he hadn’t checked in, but they outlined his half and full-day charter charges. Despite the good rates, I expressed an interest in seeing his boat before I committed. Since Billy had no charters today, they thought he’d blow in around ten-thirty or eleven. That worked perfect with my schedule.

My car slid out of the parking garage onto the roadway. Each week traffic in Los Angeles grew like ants on a sugar hill. I swung through a few side streets until I moved at a reasonable clip. Before long I was on Santa Monica Blvd. headed for the ocean. When my stomach began a revolt over a late morning meal, I pushed the automobile over the speed limit.

It was an extraordinary streamline modern-style structure that housed my breakfast destination on Wilshire, just a block or two from the sea. Although the building was a few years old, Callahan’s Diner was fresh to the location. I missed the morning rush and found a stool at the counter with no difficulty. Both my mind and digestive track had already planned our order, the eggy bread with a side of sausage links.

Consistent with other places along the coast, the war had brought a massive surge in population to the Santa Monica community. Most of the residents worked for Douglas Aircraft, however in recent months, many had started jobs at what Sears and Roebuck christened as their first free-standing department store. Further up the road, a business called the Rand Corporation had bloomed to offer employment venues.

My meal came drizzled with maple syrup and a heavy dollop of butter, which had started a slow melt. This delicious treat is a transformational way to start the morning. During our time at sea, the galley would serve the dish, but it always lacked that magic. This place had injected that wonder back into my breakfast, and it filled my spirit as much as my body.

Happy is how I felt as I returned to my auto. Nothing bad could happen to me after that meal. I shifted my car into gear and pulled away from the curb. According to the hostess, the marina was a quick drive from the restaurant. She wasn’t wrong, and I parked close to the entrance.

Boats, fish, and the ocean mix to create smells unique to marinas. Some find the aromas as a call to the adventures ahead, and others find it a horrible stink to escape posthaste.
